Members and Friends of Austin Mennonite Church

I pray you are anticipating adventure and discovery in your experience of the new year.

How many of us have wondered how much different perceptions of the human spirit were before the coming of God’s holy spirit upon all persons who share life on the planet? Prior to the event at Pentecost when God’s spirit empowered those gathered in worship to boldly witness of their experience of salvation in the message of Jesus, the scripture records the divine spirit preferentially abiding on certain persons then departing after the intended pronouncement had been accomplished. ‘The word of the Lord came to me’ is a descriptive formula for designating an appeal as a declaration communicated by God to a prophet’s audience. It indicated the announcement was more than an opinion or a recommendation. What followed was a divine directive. How much different would the chronicles of the Hebrew people read if the holy spirit had been a constant resource for every person in the community? Would there have been a violent conquest of the lands of the Canaanites who occupied the ‘promised land’ or rather a gentle, respectful coexistence? Would we find there divine directions for Israelites to slaughter women, children, and even animals? These thoughts will compose the sermon for next Sunday, 'The difference a holy spirit makes.'

May it go well with you. Sincerely,
Garland Robertson
