A Postcard and a Prayer
*The masks we wear*
MW USA Board and Staff at work and play
*Then our mouth was filled with laughter, ** *
*and our tongue with shouts of joy; *
* then it was said among the nations,
'The Lord has done great things for them.' *
*3 The Lord has done great things for us, *
* and we rejoiced. Psalm 126: 2-3*
The masks we wear, sometimes to hide our fears, sometimes to hide from
being known by others, sometimes for fun or to tease others, "mask" or hide
the real person behind the mask.
[image: Board_masks]MW USA Board members had fun when preparing for a
formal photo, donning these masks placed on the front pews of Silverwood
Mennonite Church in preparation for the next Sunday's worship. We wondered
how we would look with these masks "masking" who we really are. The masks
also portray a portion of who we are - that we enjoy a little fun in the
midst of hard work.
Consider the masks that you wear from day to day, their purpose and their
necessity, and how you might rid yourself of those masks.

[image: Hannah]"It seems like everyone wants to get in on the action when
it comes to giving women advice on how they should clothe themselves.
Women's bodies often get viewed as some sort of communal drawing board....
This constant haggling and attention paid to appearance reinforces the fact
that a woman is, above all, a sexual object who should be shrouded and/or
displayed appropriately. And we women are sometimes the worst offenders. We
can look at other women's clothing and suggest that it's not
appropriate...." asserts Hannah Heinzekeher (above right) in her article in
the July/August issue of timbrel.
[image: Lois]Also in this issue, Lois Deckert (left) admonishes Mennonite
women: "The conformity of the past restricts us and yet, it gives us
identity. As we lay aside past dress codes, we need to pick up and put on
the codes of behavior that identify us as God's children, doing God's will
no matter what we wear."
This challenging issue of *timbrel* is the second issue exploring various
perspectives Mennonite women share on the topic of Clothing and Faith.
*timbrel to become quarterly publication
*
At the April MW USA board of directors' meeting, following extensive
discussion regarding budget and *timbrel* magazine's financial viability,
the board took action to publish *timbrel* as a quarterly publication
beginning in January, 2013. All current subscriptions will be honored for
six issues. All new one-year subscriptions will continue to be $15.
We continue to value your feedback about *timbrel* and other MW USA
publications.
*What women are saying about timbrel
*
"I am so glad to see this issue of *timbrel* because so many older women
carry a great deal of resentment about the dress codes forced on them when
they were young. Healing really is needed."
"This topic has been the source of many family quarrels over the years!"
*timbrel Sister Question
*
The Sister Question for the September/October issue of timbrel which will
focus on Creatively Handling Conflict is:
*What healthy and/or unhealthy ways of handling conflict have you observed
among your sisters in Christ?*
Send your responses to Patty <pattyb@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx?> by July 20. Be
sure to include your name and hometown.

Summer is a time many of us attend family weddings, graduations, and
wedding anniversary celebrations. Consider giving a timbrel subscription to
women celebrating these events. It is a gift that keeps them connected to
the Mennonite Church, and is a gift that gives all year long.
Your subscriptions, prayers, and financial gifts to timbrel are needed now
more than ever to allow us to continue to publish *timbrel*, the only
publication for Mennonite women in North America.
*To subscribe to timbrel, send $15 for one year or $13 per person for a
group of 10 or more to Mennonite Women USA, 718 N Main St., Newton, KS
67114. You can also email <bernik@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx?> or call 866.866.2872,
ext. 34396. We'll start your subscription and send you a bill.*

[image: Renee]At almost the halfway point of the 2,184.2 mile Appalachian
trail hike begun by Renee Neufeld and her sister Alison on April 4, Renee
stopped at Rhoda Keener's home for a bed, shower, meal, and even a game of
Dutch Blitz. (Alison dropped out for health reasons.) Renee and Rhoda met
in September 2011 at Swan Lake Christian Camp where Renee was Program
Director and Rhoda and Carolyn Heggen presented a Sister Care seminar.
Renee had walked 1,076.1 miles when she arrived in the Shippensburg,
Pennsylvania area on July 3. After a good night's sleep and time to share
stories of skunks, bears, and rattlesnakes, Renee resumed her hike - with
Rhoda and two grandsons, Samuel and Benjamin Ramos, accompanying her for a
mile before waving good-bye.

Music plays a vital role in our lives. Someone has said, "Music speaks what
cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart
and makes it whole, and flows from heaven to the soul." (Author Unknown)
In our congregations we would all agree that music becomes the channel
through which our spirit joins with the Spirit of Christ during worship.

*[image: Jane]Untamed tiger: A look at Acts 4:32-35 *
*by Jane Yoder-Short*
While some Christians campaign for certain texts to be taken literally, few
advocate the authoritative nature of the wild generosity reported on in
Acts 4:32-35. We hear of this early group of believers owning nothing. They
were selling land and houses and giving away the money. It sounds like
utter craziness, especially if land was as pricey as today's prime
agriculture ground ...

The Welcoming Prayer
by Mary Mrozowski
Welcome, welcome, welcome
I welcome everything
that comes to me in this moment
because I know it is for my healing.
I welcome all thoughts,
feelings, emotions, persons,
situations and conditions.
I let go of my desire for security.
I let go of my desire for approval.
I let go of my desire for control.
I let go of my desire to change any situation,
condition, person, or myself.
I open to the love and presence of God
and the healing action and grace within.
Amen
