Do you 'back up' the stitching before you restart?
We always use tweezers and pull the loose thread up until it stops coming out,
clip it right down short-then back up the stitching 6 or so stitches behind
that point. When it restarts, if there is a 'tail' left we cut that off
afterwards and hit the spot with a dot of Fray Check.
