Thanks Roland for the information. Just to let you know, this is my first
job with the heat press and my heat press should arrive on next Monday. I
found one of the catalogs yesterday and was surprised to find the prices for
those. But the quantities were high.
1. Full back sweatshirt: $20 for the application + sweatshirt. How do you
figure out the cost and the profit there?
2. names: 3.50 /batch - 5.00 individual ( how big of a name - is it as big
as the width of the shirt?)
3. Learnt the hard way about customer supplied garments. I screwed one up
on my amaya last week and was doing just names and did not get any profit
for doing the job. NO CUSTOMER SUPPLIED GARMENTS IN MY SHOP!!

The easiest way to figure out what to charge for heat sealing
numbers, names etc. is to get catalogs from sportswear suppliers
(GAME, HighFive, etc.) and see what THEY charge for doing the same
thing. Then you will not only know your cost on the uniforms and game
shirts (you ARE all buying them-not letting the customer supply them,
right? Why miss on that profit) but also know what the going rate is
for application.
I do a lot of cadcut vinyl application-I use mostly Thermoflex line
but still have some Stahls kicking around-and I get minimum of $15
just to do a one color saying or logo on the front or back of a
regular teeshirt (including the shirt). Always have someone that just
wants 'one shirt' with something on it.
Full back (like on a sweatshirt-up to 12" x 13") is $20 plus the
sweatshirt.
Just a 'name' like on bowling shirts on the shoulder- $3.50 in a
batch, or $5 for just one. Hats are great- $3-5 per hat plus the cost
of the hat. Fast way to make bucks on the foam front 'trucker' hats.
And I very rarely ever allow the customer to bring in their own garment.
All your 'retail' shirts and sweats (Walmart, Kmart, Sears, whatever)
have been treated by the mfg. with 'brighteners'-to keep them looking
good on the racks under flourescent lighting. Guess what-if this
isn't WASHED OUT it can prevent screenprinting and iron on lettering
from sticking through the first wash!
Garments you buy through a distributor-FOR imprinting-have NOT had
this additive put on.
For the rare instance where the customer does bring in something (I
can't always get an XXXX shirt for example) then I make them take it
home and wash it-and I add an additional $2 to the price. Why should
I lose profit because they bought the shirt from someone else? I have
overhead too!
I have my own Versacamm printer/cutter now-and with a little more
training and some program tweaking I will be doing printed full color
iron on decals for shirts and hats-mostly for the hats I have laying
around.
