Wendy,
How did I know Scripts were going to be the main ones? :)
I did some playing around last Friday with the 2 scripts you mention here.
They are tough ones. Scripts are tough to begin with due to the varying
columns widths and crossing columns in some letters. Here are a couple of
suggestions for you.
First, when a Maximum and Minimum size is stated, be sure to apply the
minimum size to the lower case letters. If you set the minimum to .2 for
Melco script, look at how small the lower case letters are. Zoom in on the
stitches and measure their length with the Ruler tool. They get pretty
small. Also, do not turn off Short Stitches unless you do not have the 2004
software. In the 2004 software, there is a button next to the Short Stitch
Check Box. Click on it and it lets you set the Short Stitch Length. Set it
to 160%. Look at the short stitches zoomed in on curves before and after
setting this and you will see the difference.
I would have to actually have an example file you are having problems with,
but Friday I sewed with Melco Script using my name. I sewed it on a white
piece of pique knit with black thread. I think this is about one of the
worst combinations to try and get to work. :) At .3", the lower case are
about .2, so I used .3 inches, with a Center Walk underlay set to 20 pts
stitch length. I used a 130% column width with a 110% Letter Width. I used a
density of 5. The needle I used was a 70/10 BP. I saved the lettering as EXP
and then opened the EXP design so I could look at the actual stitches output
after filtering. You will notice that the this alphabet has Tie Stitches
digitized into it. It is a very old Melco alphabet digitized years ago. This
puts a bunch of stitches in at the end and beginning of all the letters. I
used the Convert Alphabet function of the Tools Pull Down menu to remove
these and remade the file from scratch to insure that the changes to the
alphabet take effect. I then turned on Ties Stitches using a Number 1 type
for both.
TIP: Manually put Trims into the lettering where you want it to trim between
words or going from upper case to lower case. Use the add ties Only When
Necessary feature. I say to put the Trims in manually because in the
5.07.023 version of the software, the Trim if Connector greater function is
not always working correctly and it will cause the addition of ties where
you do not want them. This is fixed in the June maintenance release coming
up. Also, turn on View Ties in the View Properties Tab so you can see them
in the Stitch List while in Wire Frame Mode of the original OFM file.
This seemed to give me a pretty good file and sewed pretty well for me.
I then looked at the Freehand Script. This alphabet has a very narrow
column width. I used a 190% column width and then saved a file as EXP so I
could then load and look at the stitches. With my design filter set to
Delete Short Stitches and the short stitch length set to 4, I had places
where the stitches were getting deleted and it look terrible. These areas
had square stitches due to the one before it being deleted. I had to set my
short stitch length on the Design Filter to a 5pt stitch. I will be honest
with you, this alphabet should have the minimum size for use at about .5",
not .25. I have made recommendations to do so in the code sheets. Anytime
you have column widths where stitches are getting filtered by the stitch
filter, they are too narrow and you are going to have problems. Changing the
short stitch length in the Filter is not always the solution. Any machine,
not just Amaya will have problems with stitches of this length. There are
some machines that filters in their internal software that are set to 5
points. SWF is one. I have talked to people who have their Tie stitches
filtered in their SWF machine due to this internal filter. It is just not
good to try and expect any embroidery machine to sew stitches of 4 to 7
points consistently. Then try and put that on a knit type of material and
you are asking for nothing but head aches. I think it is Janel, (who is on
this list) that states she will not digitize letters with less than a 8
point column by rule. She can correct me if I am wrong. ;)
I assume by mentioning Registration, you are referring to the Althletic
Block #2 alphabet. Is this correct? Where the fills in the center part of
the alphabets do not match the outlines in all cases? Are you using an
underlay in the fills? If not try this by turning on Underlay in the Fills
property Page. Also try adding Column Width on the Column properties page to
add width to the outlines. Is this what you are referring to?
Another tip I have tried and works is to go to a smaller diameter thread.
Go to a 50 or 60 weight thread. Melco does not carry it, but I believe
Madeira does and also Robinson Anton. Use a 65/9 needle with it and you get
real nice edges and detail. This is recommended by many who digitize and sew
small lettering.
If you want to, send me some files to look at.
