That is the piece that links the reciprocator to the Z drive shaft.  If that
were to break, the needle would sort of float up and down but not twist as
well.  If that's the case, not a major repair...  unless it threw something
out of wack, like the Z timing.  Even then it's just time consuming.  I have
heard of a few breaking on earlier models.
