I agree with Rod with the reciprocator and/or needle bar stud being a problem.
If not one of those suggestions, could be the "connecting rod". That is the
piece that links the reciprocator to the Z drive shaft. If that were to break,
the needle would sort of float up and down but not twist as well. If that's
the case, not a major repair... unless it threw something out of wack, like
the Z timing. Even then it's just time consuming. I have heard of a few
breaking on earlier models.
Just whatever you do, don't power up the machine until it's fixed. I have
heard of customers turning machines back on to try to identify the problem by
"hearing the sound again". Oh boy?!
