Last year, the chairs were done with a matching sewn patch on the back......so 
we'll need to replicate that.

  Here's another option,
      Although I don't know how professional the end result would be.  Use a 
piece of matching fabric and some "Wonder Under" (I think that's the name) and 
iron on the piece of fabric to the back side.  I would think this would be much 
faster than sewing.  You would really want the hot glue to bond into the fabric 
so really iron it well.
