Edna,
You are right. The book I am thinking about is Sandra Betzina's "Fabric
Savvy". The book is a wealth of information about all kinds of fabrics.
There aren't any real samples in it after all, but you could purchase
samples at a fabric store.
And, our collective definition of chambray is confirmed in the book. Go, us!

No samples. The book I have is a thick softcover book. Could it be a betzina
book we're thinking of?

Edna,
Doesn't Claire Shaeffer's book you mention have fabric samples in it? I know
someone has a book out like that.

I have to admit, I get frustrated by fabric terms and their real
counterparts. I would love to make (or buy!!!) a book with definitions and
real samples.
Anyone know of such a thing? I guess I could go to the fabric store.....

According to Claire Shaeffer's "Fabric Sewing Guide", chambray is a
plain-weave, smooth fabric with colored warp and white filling (weft?).
Looks like denim but lighter weight. Originally all cotton, today it may be
a synthetic or a blend. Wears and launders well. Uses: shirts, sportswear,
and children's clothes.

maybe someone can drop a description of what 'chambrey' is for us here?
Off the top of my head, which is a ways off the ground so the air is
thin up here...I seem to think that
chambrey is a finer quality or smoother denim material? But it would
be great to know what it really
is for someone that asks.
