Toni,
You can go to http://www.melco-service.com/Downloads\downloads.htm to
download the boot disk file that will make a boot disk for you.
The reason you have heard you need Windows 98 to make a Boot Disk is
probably due to the fact that in Windows XP there is not an easy way to
format a DS/DD disk. A boot disk has to be made on a 720KB or DS/DD only. It
will not work if made on a HD or High Density disk.
There is a couple of ways around this. First, if you buy DS/DD disks that
are already formatted then Windows XP will write and read them ok. Windows
XP will read and write to them with no problems. Use the already formatted
DS/DD disk and then use the file you download from Melco that makes a Boot
Disk and follow the instructions. If you need to format a DS/DD disk then
second method is below. (This information may be of interest to those who
have the need to make Tajima disks as well.)
You actually can format a 720KB disk on an XP computer. Microsoft just did
not build it into their interfaces. The ability is still there, you just
have to do it a different way. The way to do it is from a DOS Prompt, or
make a tiny batch file and save it on your Desktop.
To do it from a Dos Prompt, click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command
Prompt. In the Command Prompt Window, type in FORMAT A: /T:80 /N:9 /X /V
/FS:FAT and press enter. It will start the dialogue to insert a disk etc.
Follow the instructions.
I create a batch file and save it to my desktop so all I have to do is
click on it to format a disk. To create the file, open Notepad by clicking
on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Notepad. When Notepad opens, type in on
the first line, FORMAT A: /T:80 /N:9 /X /V /FS:FAT then press enter. On the
second line type in EXIT and again press enter. Then click on FILE then SAVE
as. In the top area select the Desktop to save to, in the file name area
near the bottom type FORMAT720.BAT. Then click on SAVE. You will now have an
Icon on your Desktop that when double clicked on will format a DS/DD disk.
For those of you making Tajima Disks, when the format procedure gets done
the computer will ask you if you want to enter a Label. If you enter in
TAJIMA (all upper case) and press enter, it will put the label in that now
makes the disk a Tajima DSDD disk for use in your Tajima machines.
Let me know if you have problems or questions.

Subject: [amayausers] boot disks
Jeff or anyone,
I have a EMT 10T not an Amaya but hope that someone here can help me. I
was told that I can d/l the files needed to make a new boot disk for my
machine but I have to have a Windows 98 computer and DSDD disks. Well I
can find the disks but don't have a Windows 98 computer and don't know
exactly where to go on the internet or even which files to d/l.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
