I did ALOT of research on heat-presses last year, before getting ours.
you can look at GK Knight's or Hotronix's from Stahl's as the two biggest
"name" manufacturer.
The choices are clam-shell press, draw-away press, swing-away press and then
the option of using air-pressure clamping (these cost alot more).
After my research, I went with a 16" x 20" Hotronix swing-away version for
these reasons.
1 - Hotronix has digital read-outs rather than dials to adjust temperatures
and times. Much more accurate.
2 - Swing-away because I figured I'd be much more likely to get burnt with a
clam-shell design where the heating element just pivots up, instead of
swinging out of the way.
3 - swing-away rather than draw-out because I didn't think that aligning
everything and then sliding it in would keep the placement as well.
4 - Hotronix because of the stahl's support and the way their heating platen
is made.
downside to swing away - it takes up more space. I designed my own
worktable that is 4x8 and set at a good height for working on for $50. If
you want plans, email me.
Things to know about heat-press.
You really should place your heat press on a dedicated circuit with at least
a 15 amp breaker - as they draw ALOT of power.
Ventilation or heat-removal is also important to think about (I don't have
this done well yet) as the heat press is like having the oven door open.
And the transfers put off a little smoke and smell.
Where to get transfers! www.txpress.com and www.proworld.com (if anyone has
any other good links - please let me know!)
Heat press has REALLY added to our bottom line! you don't make the same
profit per shirt, but I did 25 hooded sweatshirts the other night in 1 1/2
hours putting a full-size design on the front and numbers and names on the
back. I did them for my daughters softball team, so didn't charge all that
I normally would, but grossed $600 for $370 in costs, so I'll take $153 an
hour :)
Hope that gets you started.

Subject: [amayausers] Unrelated to embroidery question
I am looking for some information on heat press and I've posted to 2 other
groups last week and got absolutely no response to my question,
so..........does anyone on this list know of a heat press user group? I want
to purchase one but need to do some research first and really don't know
where to start. I want some unbiased opinions, nothing from the
manufacturer. TIA if anyone can help.
