[amayausers] Re: Pantone Book

Please don't feel dumb. Melco doesn't use the Pantone System because of
the cost of the liecense. If you match Melco to Maderia the Maderia
chart has some of the Pantone colors on the back of their color swatch
card and if you call them they will give you the Pantone colors that
match their threads. If a company has a Pantone match you can work
backwards to find a match. I do find that matching the color to the
screen doesn't always look accurate. If you can match Melco's chart
with the other thread company charts you get a better match. After
being in business two years, I bought a color swatch book for textiles
from Pantone. The one I bought is a set of strips with seven colors on
each strip. I think it has 1900 colors and it works great to match
thread. It measures 9.5" long, 2.5" high and 1.75 wide. I use it about
once a month. It is very helpful if someone wants the Baskin & Robbins
blue but they don't have a picture. It is a help but not a necessity.

Subject: [amayausers] Pantone Book

Hi all,
I spoke to another embroiderer today about matching an ARC color to a
Madeira
color. (the thread converter chart did not work). She first made a
snooty
comment about "who on earth is still using Melco thread", then was
aghast
when
I replied that I didn't have a Pantone book. Ok, I didn't even know
what a
Pantone book was, so I looked it up on the Internet.
So, now my questions are:
1. How many of you use one of these things regularly?
2. If it is an embroidery shop necessity, how new does it need to be?,
3. How exactly do you use it with embroidery thread? (hope that one
doesn't
sound TOO dumb....)

The Pantone Matching System was developed for the printing industry to
match
ink colors mostly for newspaper advertising. It can be a handy tool for

embroiders if the customer supplies a Pantone or PMS color for the
embroiderer.
There are tons of shades of each color in the book, so matching to a
thread
chart is not always easy. However, most thread suppliers will attempt
to
match it for you if you will provide the number. I bought one back in
1995 and
use it several times a month. It's best use for me is specifying a
color for
my screenprinter.
