If the knife and the selector are moving, then the cables are attached.  

The mechanism is so touchy, it can be just a hair off and not trim!  It is, 
IMHO, just too touchy for a machine that vibrates like any of these big 
powerful machines do.  Fortunately, a new trimmer is in the works and I, 
personally, can hardly wait!
