We have peg boards and we go sort by color.  It is a big time saver.

For those who have a business; how do you store the thread? By color
(shades) or by number?
 We have numerous threads, and do not know how to store them so that we will
not waste time finding what we need.
   Right now, they are in plastic containers and also on thread holders (by
shades).
 My wife can spend fifteen minutes looking for all the colors that she needs
to complete a project.
