Ron,
Thanks for introducing yourself. It's always interesting to hear how
people end up in this crazy but fun business.

Subject: [amayausers] Introduction of new member!
Hi all,
I just realized as I was posting to this list
that I had not taken the time to introduce myself as a new member.
I am very happy to have found this list of users since Amayas are
a little different than other machines and its nice to have feedback
that actually comes form fellow users.
I started my screen print business in 1989 and got into the business
so that I could make a living doing what I loved... Art.
I don't know if I would call it a living, looking back now. but I get to
do art everyday, Way too much art somedays.
I taught myself the business and purposely kept it small (read, had no
money!)
anyway over the years adding an employee or two and replacing home made
equipment with real commercial stuff slowly but surely. we grew out of
our location
6 different times. Started in the garage at home. then moved to a place
with a much
bigger garage,(and a way smaller house) our 4th move was to a large
industrial space
(2100 sq ft) and to reduce overhead we shared the space with an
embroider I had met a year
or so earlier. That went well as both our business' worked well
together. and both grew.
She grew to a point where it became more like work than a hobby and sold
the business
to a customer of hers. They pushed it even more and I began to notice
the larger number
of my customers that were opting for the higher class look of
embroidery. (didn't like it much)
and since I shared space I couldn't opt for farming the jobs out and
making a smaller profit
and still keeping my customer base like so many screen printers do.
Well after 5 years with the first owners and nearly 3 with the second,
they too became too
busy to have any fun and decided to sell, fearful of what the new owners
may do or worse yet
worried that my local competitors (other screen printers) may be
interested we made the deal
and became embroiderers!
we started with an old single head melco 6 needle and a newer 4 head
melco 6 needle.
I seemed apparent to me the one head was overworked and the 4 head was
being used as a
single head most of the time. Since the bulk of our work is small orders
in the 12 to 36 range, it made
no sense. that's when I saw the Amaya ads, and went to a Demo in
Portland, OR. and Haven Fry
showed me the new Technology. My biggest draw back was the multiple
dongle issue, which I guess
has changed since then. But we bought 4 amayas thinking that would be a
good replacement for
the 5 heads we had, well I over bought a little and wish I had spent the
money on a new Digitizing system.
I am self taught on an old system called PUNCH that I found the software
for in the stuff that we
purchased with the business, and since the old owners took the new
digitizing with them we had to make
it work. of course with no manuals or documentation its been tricky.
We've been in the embroidery business for almost 3 years now and I
really like it.
its a great medium and I love the Amaya machine, mine can be a little
temperamental
but I learn more everyday, I wish I could spend more time in the
department though.
from day one I started to digitize our new stuff, (Thank god for
re-orders of existing
designs) and I have yet to send out to have anything done for us after 2
years. I am
getting better every job. So much to learn, but with the help of a great
group
of people like this I hope to grow my business and my business contacts.
Thanks for reading this rambling story, and letting me be a part of your
community.
I hope to give as much as I get out of it.
thanks again!
and my Amayas thank you for the new found knowledge base!!
(maybe I should have gone to training??!!!)
