Hi Wendy-
If it's rhythmic and in sync with the needle as it starts, I wonder if you
are correct and it is the hook timing. The adjustment for this is not as
complex as thought, and it is even easier to check. If you lift your deck
under the z-arm and look at the timing position located there, remove the
needle plate and guard, then follow the instructions to get your needle and
hook in that exact position. Hopefully you have a magnifying glass in the
shop or house, as it makes seeing the alignment much easier for tired eyes.
I'm surprised you're not breaking a needle if it sounds that loud.
You might also check the screws that hold the hook assembly in position -
there are 3 I think. Make certain they are secure. I hope it is nothing
serious!
