I also made my own hooping guide.  I took some plastic peg board (found at
Lowe's) and cut it in several sizes to fit a variety of shirts and I use
small pegs to place around the outer hoop.  I get the hoop placed where I
want it, then pull the shirt over the board and push in the inner hoop. The
hoop stays in place for perfect placement every time.  Much cheaper than
those hooping helpers.  I think I spent a total of $20 on 2 peg boards and
made 3 different forms.
