If they are not stretchy, I've always used cap backing (yes). But I think the
problem might lie somewhere else. I would start by doing a "bottom center"
under head timing & see if (a brand new) needle hits the EXACT center of the
needle plate & adjust as necessary & go from there if the problem persisted.
