How wide is your helmet for which you are using the column stitch?

Subject: [amayausers] Fabric puckering
Hi everyone...
I am having a very strange thing happen in just one area of a design that I
digitized. The design in the standard "Trogan" head. For the main part of
the "helmet" I used a column because then I could get the stitches to run in
the direction I was them to.
For underlay I used a centerwalk and an edge walk. The problem is a soon as
the "helmet" starts to fill in, the fabric pulls together and creates a
puckered look. Do I increase the % of the edge walk? Can I put down a walk
stitch in a zig-zag pattern under it?
I am a little confused by this??
Thanks..
