I'm not a big fan on the subject but please allow me to tell you a short
story about portability...
Also, I'm an embroidery machine technician who also owns three Amaya's.
..Looking for a little exposure, one of my customers (another embroidery
shop) agreed to participate in a rather large convention at our local
convention center recently and to be allowed to work the convention, would
be required to bring at least three machines to keep up with demand. So he
elected to bring one of his single head Tajima's and an older 4 head Melco.
Equipped with at least four grown men and a large U-haul truck, they managed
to get the machines to the convention center's loading dock only to find out
that a fork lift was still necessary. In the process of moving the machine,
I'm not sure- I wasn't there, something got hung up near head #1's bobbin
area and bent the picker bracket at a sharp downward angle. (Service call!)
Come to find out the majority of the work was not repeat designs but
rather individual names and such added to garments and bags purchased at the
show. There were also problems networking to the Tajima singlehead.
Fortunately they had some floppy disks.
To make matters worse, when it was time to wrap up, it was explained to them
that due to the size of their equipment, they would have to let the union
workers load the four head for an additional fee.
He swears he'll never do conventions again.
Basis of the story...
After hearing his story I thought about how moving our Amaya's has never
been an issue as they easily roll thru an average door and combined with the
flexibility of the software to accommodate both multiple and single jobs in
addition to the ease of networking the machines, it's a shame he didn't have
Amaya's. As a technician, I still don't believe in moving a commercial
machine across town unless you have to or really have prepared for it
(because of their precision and unforeseen circumstances like potholes) but
in response to your listing, I don't think you could go wrong with the
Amaya's. I know plenty of people who take home machines on the road but I
would be interested to know how people make out moving Amaya's from show to
show. You've got to figure, the sales people do it all the time.
Good luck to you, Mark.

Subject: [amayausers] Equipment Discussion
Hello all,
I've been lurking around here for a while - We're a Brother shop, and
overall I'm quite happy with the machines we have. I've also very
interested in the Amaya - we're considering doing dance shows, etc. and
there are a lot of machines out there that are portable, but I was
considering the Amaya as a dual role investment - start with a single, then
have the ability to add as other production needs increase. I know that
listening on the list, I may be getting a view biased towards problems, so I
guess I'd be interested in others true feelings about the machine - has
anyone used it as a portable machine? Has anyone gone from a single to a
multiple head operation? If you don't want to clog the mailing list with
replies - I have an embroidery forum where I'd love to get more traffic
(started off with a bang, then hasn't been much activity in the last month).
Anyway, the forum is:

Direct email is fine as well.
Thanks for your ear,
Cheers,
mark
