I get email flyers in every day from large commercial embroidery =20
houses...offering the free digitizing, first 5,000 stitches free, =20
etc. I am a registered Ad specialty rep-and get info from over 3500 =20
suppliers constantly.
How do they do it? Its easy to figure out....
1) they are offering the specials on select items...like 'hat with =20
5,000 stitches for only $1.49 net . (yes, this is true, I have the =20
flyer). Okay, 5000 stitches is peanuts-not much there. The hats-you =20
get only ONE or TWO styles, a couple colors...that's it. No 50 page =20
catalog of selections. They have 10,000 of these hats they bought =20
from the factory overseas-paid maybe 30=A2 for them. WE on the other =20
hand, can't buy that quantity, so we pay Sanmar or Alpha $1.50 to =20
$2.00 for the same hat.
2) then, look at the 'extras'...how much per additional thousand =20
stitches? Some of them get a high price-they KNOW 5,000 stitches is =20
nothing for design.
3) digitizing has gotten real cheap-even vectorizing a design is down =20=
to $5 to $25 max (Viking Arts.com) and if done overseas, fast and cheap.
4) these shops offering the low prices will not do small =20
minimums...again, check the fine print! Usually 144 or even 500 piece =20=
minimums.
5) they aren't running amayas, or 2 head or 4 head machines. I have =20
used on 'small' commercial sewing house-they run THREE HUNDRED HEADS =20
in one plant. So an order for 144 pieces is less than 1 hour =20
work...even Dick (up in Vermont-has done work for me) has a 12 head =20
Barrudan. He did in an hour and a half 100 hats I needed.
So labor cost is now down to pennies per unit. No way we can compete =20
with this, and no sense trying. Yes, there will always be 'garage' =20
shops that match these prices-and a year later they are out of =20
business. Try and get one of these 'free everything' companies to do =20
your typical order- 12 hats, 6 jackets, a dozen sweatshirts, and a =20
couple polos. Will they touch it? Not a chance.
So don't sweat it-if you are registered as a business with your =20
embroidery, YOU can match the 'free everything' company simply by =20
selling FOR them...and pocket the profit on a large order you dread =20
to do on your own.
Anyone interested-let me know!
It doesn't cost a DIME to become registered to sell for these =20
companies and keep your clients happy!
