Just to agree with what you have said Sharon.
In our case. much of our work involves custom designs but if using a
stock design from one of the big design houses [like Dakota] we will
almost always edit that design which often will mean reducing stitch
density, removing short stitches, maybe adjusting pull compensation,
etc. There have also been times when major editing was needed to do
things like change pathing or re-do part of the design.
