I just looked at my hat drivers
to see what you are talking about
and I think the right way to do it is with a small pair of pliers
that have a saw tooth grip on the clamping ends.
That should fit into the grooves on the thumb screws and give better grip.
my bet is that's how they are tightened since finger tight WILL come loose
eventually due to vibration. Even if you slip and strip around the screw
there
looks to be enough there so you could make that mistake quite often and
still be able
to loosen and tighten those screws.
Squeeze tight and go slow.
