I guess we should talk about what kind of design you're planning to use. For instance, if it's just a heart, even with flowers inside, it will automatically be symmetrical. If you're going to use lettering, you would want to put the bottom applique piece on last, before final satin stitching. Perhaps I misunderstood. If you are wanting to sew both appliques at the same time, won't the design have to be perfectly symmetrical?
