I run 9 heads mostly by myself.  I turn over 250,000 to 300,00 a year. I
am no contract embroiderer. My top rate can be as high as $15 per 1000
stitches. 

Best part is I have 3 competitors in town in a 3 mile radus offering
free embroidery with workwear purchased from them, they advetise on TV
all the time I dont.

I think there are different levels of what would be considered a
"contract 
embroiderer".  I do contract work for 4 large ASI's to the sum of about
60% 
of my business.  The other 40% is my own customers that I charge the
same 
per thousand but make $$$ of garments as well.  I am a 12 head shop with
2 
full time and 2 part time employees including myself and my father 
(partner).  Our annual sales are in the $450,000 range and we make a
descent 
living.  I charge 50 cents per thousand for the most part and with one 
contractor I will get as low as 30 cents per thousand at time but she
sends 
me 70k a year in contract work.  The contract work has always kept me
busy 
and my machines running while my own customers that I make $$$ off the 
garments help balance things out.  I have more work than I can usually 
handle 9 months out of the year and the other 3 are busy but not crazy
busy, 
like I am now.

I agree that many contract embroiderers out there do charge 5-25 cents
per 
thousand and at that rate without doing any retail work where you make
money 
off the garments you would have to do 5k pieces a day.  An average day
for 
us is around 300 - 500 pieces a day.
