It sounds as if the optical sensor that is pretty much under the reciprocator
may have shorted out. It isn't anything you did wrong.
On occasion the insulation on the wires leading to the sensor cracks where
they are secured to the head with a wire clamp.
The smoke you got was probably from the wires "cooking."
