Wendy,
Since you're running Windows XP, one might assume your PC is fairly up
to
date (not a dinosaur) however you should verify that the PC contains all the
minimum requirements to run Amaya OS. That paperwork should have been
included with your upgrade. I know a lot of folks that get the new upgrade
CD and simply pop it in the PC without reading the attached notes that go
along with it.
If that's all square, then possibly the installation process was
compromised. Have you attempted to install the latest version of Amaya OS a
second time? Is the CD clean and free of marks or scratches?
The problem you describe sounds really odd and I wouldn't suspect the
Amaya
programs, however anything's possible. Sounds like a problem stemming from
either: a Windows operating system and it's updates, hard drive, maybe a
virus, loose wire, weak power supply, or who knows. If your PC won't boot
up correctly, the best course of action is to try and go backwards. First
remove all Amaya OS versions and see if the PC boots correctly. If it does,
(be sure to try several times to be sure) then you're close. Then install
Amaya OS again. I'd try the latest version a second time. Still troubled,
then uninstall again and confirm a good boot. Then go back to previous
version of Amaya OS and cross your fingers. I doubt it but it is possible
that you could have a faulty CD. Maybe requesting a second one from Melco
could be an option. If you remove all versions of Amaya OS (providing
you're doing it correctly), and the PC still won't boot as it should, your
problem now gets deeper into the PC.
The software guys at Melco would be the best source of information since
they deal with this for a living however they're going to need a lot of
information from you regarding your PC -both hardware and software and what
changes, if any, had been made most recently (such as updates, patches, or
additional programs installed). Understand that they might be somewhat
limited with quick fixes as everyone's PC is different. However maybe
they've seen this before.
Question: Were you having any issues with the previous version of OS?
What I mean is, If you were running without any troubles, maybe you might
choose to upgrade down the road, say when you have a second or another PC to
troubleshoot the situation.
Is there anyone else you know who would let you use their PC (maybe
laptop)
to troubleshoot? Any tech's in your area? If you have the funds, (maybe a
stretch) it wouldn't hurt to have a back up PC for times like this.
Consider it a business expense. We just bought a hooping device with only 3
attachments and spent about $550. You can get a nice PC for that if not
less these days. And consider only the PC and not the peripherals like
monitor, keyboard, printer, etc... With a KVM switch
(keyboard, video, mouse), you could quickly jump from one PC to another. If
you're small, I know this may not sound like an option but could be down the
road.
Best of luck to you.

Subject: [amayausers] Amaya OS upgrade issues
I am having a lot of problems with the Amaya OS upgrade. I know I mentioned
this before on the list but am wondering if anyone else is experiencing
problems after they've installed the upgrade. I run Windows XP and have
installed all of the updates except the most recent service pack. My machine
and computer ran with little or no problems using the 2003 version of OS.
When I got my upgrade and installed it I've had nothing but trouble starting
up my computer each day. Sometimes I have to unplug and try starting it 6 or
7 times! I talked with the company that sold me the computer and we both
think it's related to the OS software. So ...... today I uninstalled the
upgrade and reinstalled my old version and I can startup on the first try!
This leads me to believe it is definitely related to the upgrade. Any advice
before I call Melco?
