BlankJohn,
I found the spool holders were not the answer all by themselves, it was the
combo that did it. The thread nets are exactly that, stretchy netting, plastic
I think. When I use them I slip it over the spool, all the way down to the
bottom of the spool then I kind of stretch it out so it's not too tight, then I
fold over. So basically the net is surrounding the lower half of the spool. I
have extras, send me your address and I'll throw one in the mail this afternoon
for you to try.
I usually decrease my material thickness by 1 number to start with when I'm
running 60 wt. and go from there. I also loosen my bobbin tension when I'm
using the cotton bobbin, that's why I have one bobbin case just for that, it's
set just right. Of course this is just on my Princess! WE all no how fickle the
Amaya can be so you will have to do a little more trial and error to see what
works on yours.

EXACTLY! :)
That was my theory why it was breaking. We would get what I like to call
gnats of thread on top. Something that looks like a fly fishing lure... a ball
of thread that forms just before you hear the pop of the thread breaking.
Since I went thru the trouble of changing needles, adjusting the mat thick up
and down, changing the thread feed roller and cleaning the path, the only thing
I could deduce next was that it was the way the thread was coming off the small
spools.
I used the spool holder but that didn't seem to do any better than using the
melco paper coasters. What are the Thread Nets?
When you say adjust accordingly on the lighter weight... what do you mean.
Run tigher on the mat thickness and the bobbin too or reverse?

John,
Do you have the small spool of Madeira 60 wt? If you do the problem could
very well be the thread dropping down from the spool and getting caught which
in turn causes your thread to break. I experienced this for a long time before
a Madeira rep called and I told her about it. Now when I use the small 60 wt.
spool I use the Madeira spool holder and thread net and viola', no problems
thereafter. I can give you her name and number if you would like to contact her
regarding this. She sent the thread nets to me free of charge, the spool
holders I purchased when I bought the thread, they were pretty inexpensive.
You also need to adjust your material thickness accordingly as it's a lighter
weight thread. I also use cotton bobbins when using 60 wt. and have one bobbin
case adusted (tension) specifically for this. I always run with a 65/9 needle,
Organ.
I've also heard very good reports about Isalon from Isacord. It's a 40wt.
poly that runs and sews like a 60 wt. I haven't tried it but would definitely
give it a try if the opportunity arose.
Good Luck!

Ok, I know we talked about this a little recently, but I'm not sure I got
one question answered :)
1) Besides Madeira - are there any other brands that you all are using in
the 60 weight? The spool we got of 60 in poly from them seemed to break a lot
(even after moving it from needle to needle and changing rollers etc.)
2) Needles... what brand do you use with the 60 weight. 60 or 65 needle
size?
3) Poly or Rayon in 60 weight?
