Bush's staged visits to the Katrina disaster areas are not that
different than the presidential visit to the Andrew disaster in
September 1992. Shortly after that disaster hit Air Force One landed at
the Miami International Airport and a presidential motorcade took off
south along the Palmetto Expressway toward the disaster area South of
Miami. The motorcade went as far as the first uprooted tree, at which
time it stopped, the president got out and had his picture taken in
front of the tree. He said some kind words about the disaster for the
TV cameras, got back in his limo, and returned to the airport where he
re-boarded Air Force One and immediately left for Andrews Air Force
base and D.C. The president was George Herbert Walker Bush. He lost the
November 1992 election (i.e., less than two months later) to Bill
Clinton. At least his son faked it a bit better!!!
