Membership of Alternate ROOTS,
 
As many of you know, ROOTS recently launched a multi-faceted plan to assist
in addressing the needs of the artistic community affected by Hurricane
Katrina.  Details of this plan are posted on our website and were emailed to
the membership.  Since that time, ROOTS has been fortunate to receive an
anonymous contribution of $34,700.02 through the Community Foundation of
Greater Atlanta, Inc. in support of our relief efforts for ROOTS artists
impacted by the storm.
 
Recently, an initial discussion took place amongst ROOTS members in the
affected region concerning the short and long term personal and professional
needs we now face.  We are asking all ROOTS members in the impacted areas to
contact us with their personal needs.  The idea is that a portion of this
money will be distributed to deal with immediate problems faced by our
membership.  The second part of this discussion suggested that we use the
remainder of these funds to sponsor long-term community based art projects
in our region. It was suggested that Louisiana/Mississippi ROOTS members
serve as administrators with regards to the allocation of finances
distributed for such projects.
 
We are currently trying to asses the varying levels of interest and
availability that Alternate ROOTS members can contribute to the development
of projects that will emerge in our region as a result of this donation.  On
a local level, ROOTS members from Mississippi and Louisiana are currently
working to contact artists in this Rhizome who intend to work with citizens
in our communities as we embark on this journey of re-vitalization.   In
addition to this local effort, we would like to receive your input about
projects that will occur here over the next several months.
