[altroots] Re: Jose Torres Tama Keynote on Performance Art @ "Americans for the A rts" Austin, TX

My dear cyber arts aficionados:

I often write from a variety of cities on the road, and presently, I am in
Austin of big Texas for the ?American for the Arts Conference.? I am here as a
?Keynote Speaker? in the pre-conference sessions to present a performed
analysis entitled ?Performance Art as A Creative Strategy to Empower
Marginalized Communities.? In short, this presentation explores how I employ
performance art as a creative tool to empower African American and Latino youth
and other disenfranchised communities across the country through residency
projects such as the ?Youth Performance Projects? and the ?MediAmerica
Intergenerational Performances.?

Covering ten years worth of residency work across the country, I comment on
performance art as a genre where the mythology of personal stories are
cultivated, spoken and performed and performance as a creative forum for
cross-cultural collaborations across the borders of age, class and race. I
will have more on the text of this presentation and performance art as genre to
inspire cultural empowerment available on the web site soon.

I may see some of you here.

Gracias,

Jose Torres Tama

Visual & performance artist, writer, director and youth educator, Jose Torres
Tama is on the move again with multidisciplinary projects that explore the
immigrant experience, the American Dream mythology and the effects of media on
our lives. Cultivating young voices through his ?Youth Performance Projects,?
he offers African American & Latino teens a creative forum for cross-cultural
collaboration and self-empowerment through performance of their personal
stories. His ?MediaAmerica? intergenerational projects employ performance art
as a strategy to critically analyze the media and address the misinformation it
generates about diverse cultures across the country. His solo shows are hybrid
spectacles of theater and performance art--informed by bilingual texts, spoken
word, visual tableaus, movement and rituals of fire.
