International Young Leaders’ Peace Summit begins with Mindfulness Walk
& Prayer Vigil in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday, April 19th
Sponsored by Spirit of Truth Foundation
ATLANTA, GA – April 4, 2005. The 2005 “Beyond the Global Divide:
International Young Leaders Peace Summit” (BGD) will commence with a
walk and prayer vigil for global peace on Tuesday, April 19th, from
10am – 2pm. “Resurrecting Peace: Mindfulness Walk & Prayer Vigil” will
begin at 10am at the Fulton County Courthouse in downtown Atlanta and
end at The King Center, located at the epicenter of the Civil Rights
Movement.
“Beyond the Global Divide” provides a unique and exciting opportunity
for young leaders and elders from around the world (many of whom are
from indigenous cultures) to gather and lend their wisdom, skills and
energy to spark development of community-based projects that affect
social justice and world peace in communities around the globe--in
effect, creating a worldwide network of emerging young leaders with
traditional elders serving as mentors. The first “Beyond the Global
Divide” summit (BGD), hosted in 2002, began with a mindfulness walk in
Memphis, Tennessee, led by Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk from Vietnam,
who was nominated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1967. BGD participants also made a special visit to the
Lorraine Motel, site of Dr. King’s assassination.
“Resurrecting Peace: Mindfulness Walk & Prayer Vigil” will occur
exactly 40 days after the March 11th shooting incident at the Fulton
County Courthouse. April 19th, 2005 also marks the 10-year anniversary
of the Oklahoma City bombing and the 12-year anniversary of the siege
on the Branch Davidian complex in Waco, Texas. Furthermore, April 19th
is the most frequent date in the Gregorian calendar upon which Easter
Sunday falls, hence the name “Resurrecting Peace”.
The late Lakota elder Harry F. Bryd stated that, “One sincere prayer
has more power than an atomic bomb”. All civic, spiritual, and
political leaders, as well as everyday people, are invited and
encouraged to participate by gathering outside of the Fulton County
Courthouse at 10am on the morning of Tuesday, April 19th in mindful
support of peace and healing for the local and global community, as
well as Earth itself. Some of the esteemed invited guests include
Governor Sonny Perdue, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Congressman John
Lewis, and Mayor Shirley Franklin, as well as various Atlanta city
council members and spiritual clergy.
Spirit of Truth Foundation (STF), sponsor of “Beyond the Global
Divide”, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that evolves the paradigm
for leadership development through the implementation of programs and
services that expose young people to an expanded worldview. STF
focuses its efforts in areas of relationship building; arts and
culture; wisdom sharing that is intergenerational and intercultural;
leadership development; and the preservation and documentation of
information shared by indigenous wisdom carriers.
