AIDS Quilt featured in Downtown GalleriesSubject: Celebrating The Quilt in
Downtown Atlanta
VSA arts of Georgia/Arts for All Gallery currently has an exhibit of
photographs by Billy Howard from his cutting-edge book, "Epitaphs for the
Living," published in 1989. In conjunction with the photographs is a Quilt
panel that includes some of the people in the photographs. The Rialto Center
has many of the Quilt panels, also including memorials for some of the people
in the photographs.
This is for information only, no reservations are needed. VSA arts of
Georgia/Arts for All Gallery will be open as usual for a Turner First Thursday
reception on Thursday, October 6 from 5:00 - 8:00. Mr. Howard will be here to
sign his books (for purchase) and other events will take place honoring the
photographs and The Quilt.
Central Atlanta Progress will host â??An Atlanta Block Party â??
Celebrating The Quilt in Downtown Atlantaâ?? from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, October
6 as part of Turner First Thursdays.
This free special event will feature displays of 12-foot by 12-foot
sections or â??blocksâ?? of The AIDS Memorial Quilt in seven Downtown
galleries.
The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be curated in the participating galleries to
tell the story of life in the age of AIDS. The early years of the pandemic will
be explored in an exhibition titled, "Life, Love and Loss: Selections from
Billy Howardâ??s Epitaphs for the Living and The AIDS Memorial Quilt" at the
Arts for All Gallery at VSA Arts of Georgia. In conjunction with the VSA
exhibition, The Rialto Center for the Performing Arts will host 12 blocks of
Quilt, memorializing nearly 100 lives lost to AIDS.
Other hosting galleries include Luckie Street Studios, Museum of
Contemporary Art of Georgia at SunTrust Plaza, The Museum of Design Atlanta,
APEX (African American Panoramic Experience), and Youth Art Connection. The
â??Block Partyâ?? will also feature docent led tours, gallery talks and
quilting/bundling demonstrations.
Complimentary Clos du Bois wine will be provided in selected venues.
