Dear Mr. White:

Thank you for contacting my office about funding for National
Public Radio (NPR) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
It is good to hear from you.

I agree that as the Federal government is faced with a budget
deficit, it is important to make wise decisions on how we spend taxpayer
dollars and keep Federal spending under control.

Public Broadcasting was first established by Congress in 1967
with the creation of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. National
Public Radio was founded in 1970 as an association of 90 public radio
stations. Additionally, both NPR and CPB get a majority of their funding
from private contributors such as corporate sponsors and individual
subscribers. Only 11.6 percent of public broadcasting's total income is
appropriated by Congress.

In H.R. 2673, the "Omnibus Appropriations for fiscal year
2004," Congress appropriated $400 million in advance funding for fiscal
year 2006 for the CPB, an increase of $10 million over the fiscal year
2005 funding level. The President signed this legislation into law on
January 23, 2004. With a federal budget and a huge national debt, we
must make sure to make wise choices about spending taxpayer's money.
Should this legislation regarding this issue come before the Senate, I will
certainly keep your views in mind.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with
me. If I can be of any further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to

let me know.

Sincerely,

Saxby Chambliss
United States Senate
