Myra,

I assume you're using Outlook Express?
Sounds like you have your messages grouped by conversation.  Would you like to 
disable this feature?
If you'd like for Outlook to stop saying that 'collapsed' and 'expanded' thing, 
and you need to delete some messages, do this:
Do an alt-V to go into the View menu.
The first item you should land on will be Current View Submenu.  Enter on that.
Next, down-arrow about six times until you hear the option, "Group messages by 
conversation."
If this is checked, enter to uncheck it.
You'll then be taken out of the menus, and the messages will no longer be 
sorted by conversation.
