Hi Erin,
Well, you shouldn't be expected to realize about those links that Jaws does not recognize as links. I've only seen GMail and 1 other website containing this kind of nonstandard links. 
It's a nightmare for screen readers. I hope they have a fix for that soon.
I always have trouble routing the Jaws cursor to the right place.

I haven't tried the GMail procedure yet, but thank you so much for taking the time to write all the steps. I don't know why I didn't think of playing around with the JAWS cursor. The idea went right over my head... Just out of curiosity, do you live in the SF bay area? I spent 18 months there, and I really miss it sometimes.
