[accessibleimage] Re: what about?

Hi Lisa,

Very interesting discussion about mapping. This may be of interest to
listers: we are working on a map creation project with Smith Kettlewell Eye
Research Center in San Francisco. The project is based on TMAP, a system
developed by Josh Miele of Smith Kettlewell. It allows the creation of
one-off neighborhood maps based on existing GIS databases similar to what
ate used by Mapquest or Google Maps. So far, it only works in the US, but
in principle, it will work anywhere such databases are available. There is
an article (in text format) about this work at
http://www.touchgraphics.com/publications/BJVI-Final.txt. There's also a
pdf with some pictures here:
http://www.touchgraphics.com/publications/BJVI-Final.pdf

Right now, we're adapting the maps that Josh's system makes for the TTT, so
that users can explore the maps with audio description of each element that
they press. Information includes street name, block length, and addresses.
We're also creating a tool for customizing maps by adding points of
interest, marking routes, and providing overview information about the areas
depicted.

We will be running a test of the system in June of 2007. We hope to recruit
up to 100 current users of the TTT in the US. Each participant will try to
produce a map of their neighborhood using the system. We are hoping to have
results of that test ready for presentation at the 2007 International
Cartographic Association conference in Moscow, which is in August. We will
be sending out a mailing to all known users of the TTT in early 2007 to
invite people to participate. There is a small honorarium for participants.

If anyone is interested in participating, please send me a message at

Hello Lisa:

In answer to your questions, the users of the Sendero GPS systems can
create Waypoints and upload these for sharing. At this time, there is no way

a user can print out a map with this data.
