Well yes there is an easy/inexpensive way to get tactile images of
photographs, but no there isn't a way to get a tactile image that you
would probably like. You can just emboss the image with any ViewPlus
embosser, and the image will be reproduced with dark areas as tall dots
and light areas as low dots. So presto you have a tactile image of a
photograph. However what you probably would like is a relief image of
the photograph with near regions higher and distant regions lower. For
example a portrait in relief would have the nose sticking out and the
eyes recessed. As far as I know there is no easy way to do this,
although there are some research projects attempting to recognize
various natural images and, among other things, produce relief images
that could then be embossed on that ViewPlus embosser. Stay tuned for a
few more years.
