[accessibleimage] Re: tactile image production

Well yes there is an easy/inexpensive way to get tactile images of photographs, but no there isn't a way to get a tactile image that you would probably like. You can just emboss the image with any ViewPlus embosser, and the image will be reproduced with dark areas as tall dots and light areas as low dots. So presto you have a tactile image of a photograph. However what you probably would like is a relief image of the photograph with near regions higher and distant regions lower. For example a portrait in relief would have the nose sticking out and the eyes recessed. As far as I know there is no easy way to do this, although there are some research projects attempting to recognize various natural images and, among other things, produce relief images that could then be embossed on that ViewPlus embosser. Stay tuned for a few more years.
