[accessibleimage] Re: need resource suggestions

Hi Sandra

My colleague Jonathan Rowell has quite a bit of information on the available
'guidelines.' His message follows.

Cheers

Don

Hi Sandra

Regarding your request for information about producing tactile graphics, a
couple of suggestions for consideration. You might want to subscribe to
TacNews, the newsletter of the ICA Commission on Maps and Graphics for Blind
and Partially Sighted People which has a dedicated guide to tactile
resources in a feature called 'Where can I find it?' Issue 1 focussed on web
based design assistance; Issue 2 on Practical Guides in book, manual &
report form. Issue 3 due February provides a list to supplement the first
two. Subscription is free, and anyone wishing to be included on the mailing
list should contact either Ann Gardiner, newsletter editor and regular
contributor to the forum, or myself at the email given below. Many of the
web based recommendations can be accessed directly from the Links page of
INTACT, the commission website:

Alternatively as I'm currently working on a critique of map and graphic
design guidelines, I've provided a selective list of the sources I'm using
below. Not all of these are easy to interpret or get hold of, but as the
most accessible are usually the most substantial, they will provide at least
some of the information you require, and the basis for good grounding in
tactile graphic design techniques.

production and presentation of vacuum formed tactile maps.

Hope this helps. Anyone else wishing to learn more about tactile design
guidelines or the commission is welcome to contact me offline. Remember
we're always looking for material for TacNews, and all contributions however
small are gratefully received.

I am a former VI teacher/Orientation and Mobility Instructor whose primary
work now is braille transcription for school age children. I would love
suggestions for "must have" books with guidelines for producing tactile
graphics.
