[accessibleimage] Workshop announcement of interest

Hi,
Forwarding this mail from the Viewplus userlist. Prof. Ladner sounds very
interesting.
Regards,
Lisa

ViewPlus users may be interested in the following announcement from Prof.
Richard Ladner of the University of Washington. Prof. Ladner is
organizing
this event as part of a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The University of Washington and the National Federation of the Blind are
also sponsors. The event includes many tutorial sessions, a vendor fair,
and social events for blind students and for professionals who work with
blind people in science, technology, engineering, and math. I will be
participating as a presenter/mentor, and ViewPlus will be present in the
vendor fair.

A side note of interest is that Prof. Ladner is the principal investigator
of a NSF grant to make better tools for converting mainstream information,
primarily textbooks in math and science, into tactile form. ViewPlus is
collaborator in this research, and his software (which is supposed to
greatly reduce the effort of converting graphics to simpler form,
converting text to braille, etc.) should be a big boon to specialists who
need to do such things. This software project is not complete, but I am
sure that participants will be able to learn about it during the workshop.

Announcement from Prof. Richard Ladner, University of Washington:

I am pleased to announce the Vertical Mentoring Workshop for the Blind
(VMWB) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to be
held July 26-28, 2006 at the University of Washington, Seattle. Please go
to the web site for information.
