Yes Linda,
My earlier versions of Nomad and TGD did link to Braille output devices for
precisely the reasons you mention. However, being a small organisation of 1
and a part time programming friend for 16 years we found that it was
impossible to afford to get the devices to develop and test - It is NOT a
difficult excercise - just a matter of sending the 'noise' to the braille
cells - I think we did it with an Alva braille cell system - 10 years ago or
more.
There were similar difficulties in the early days, 15 years ago, with a
plethora of speech synthesizers. This is why we include the Microsoft TTS
speech engines now - not only are they good they are free for all and cover
a number of languages. If Braille cell makers would like to send us their
products for long term loan - as Index did with an embosser - and Enabling
Technologies many years ago - we could make this happen almost "overnight".
Typically only a word or two is being 'spoken from the label'. Over to you
Linda.
Don
