[accessibleimage] Re: Tactile Graphics Options

Hi Kaye,
Our email has been "down" for a couple of weeks, thanks to an incorrect
command entered by a Verizon employee, so I'm not familiar with the current
message thread.
As you know, we tackled the problem of multiple copies of CAT by
including the Microsoft Word files and the Braille 2000 files on a CD and
are sending them to the Florida Instructional Materials Center (FIMC). This
solves several problems. First of all anyone with a wide format printer, a
supply of "swell paper", and a toaster can reproduce the graphics to their
heart's content. The second advantage is the absence of the large volume of
inventory FIMC has had to file to reproduce additional copies of graphics
for additional requests .
We gave our CAT seminar to the faculty at the Florida School of the Deaf
and Blind in St. Augustine and learned they have decided to use CAT graphics
to handle the large volume of textbook graphics you referred to earlier.
Our goal is to convey the information to the student and these seem to be
doing the job once the student becomes familiar with the swell paper
graphics. I t would be nice to be able to produce hand generated graphics
of the quality you mentioned, however we feel it is better to give the
student part of something rather than all of nothing which was the situation
prior to CAT graphics. Our volunteer Braille transcribers simply have
neither the time or skill to produce the hand generated graphics. We do
have two transcribers who could produce them but they are our two Nemith
transcribers and their talents are in continuing demand. Funds are non
existant to purchase additional equipment for the processes you are
discussing and we continue to improve our CAT techniques to do the best
possible under the circumstances.
    Regards,
      Pete Schuyler - Sarasota, FL
