Hi all:

One hundred percent agreed.
Accessibility for all is the main word and thouse who work more directly with people with som disability must pay double attention to it.
Best,
Francisco Lima

Hi Francisco and all,

I have been using JAWS since 1992. Right now I am using JAWS 4.5. It works
well for most of what I need to do. I have had to purchase a number of
upgrades over time to get to JAWS 4.5.
Many of us don't have the funds to pay $120 or more periodically for ongoing
upgrades of our screen readers, and the motivation isn't always there,
especially when the increase in functionality for most things other than
PDFs aren't that great. Also, I know a number of people who are using JAWS
5.1 and above who are still having difficulty with many PDFs because they
are not easily accessible unless the people who create them take special
care to be sure that they are.

I assume that the producers of TacNews have been more careful about
accessibility than most. But, I think it is important that publications,
especially those that deal with issues of great relevance to people with
visual impairments, should be available in formats that are fully accessible
to all, not just those who have the funds to pay for the ongoing upgrades.

And, I know that many PDFs that are made without special care for their
accessibility are still not accessible, despite the fact that they have been
made with the newest version of the Adobe Acrobat program.

So, I think it is important to have the text-only versions available as
alternatives to the PDF files.

Best,

Sylvie

Hi Sylvie:

I also use Jaws (v5.0). You can read .pdf files fairly well with Jaws if you
have acrobat v5, for example. Version 6 of the program can also easily
convert .pdf to .txt format.
If I can be of any help with using .pdf files, please let me know.
On the other hand, .pdf files of image versions of texts are not accessible
at all.
It is highly suggested that .doc files are also available, when .pdf files
are provided.
Best regards,
Francisco Lima

Hi,

I really appreciate TacNews. But, I have a problem.
I went to the link, but I could only find the February 2006 issue in PDF
format. I am using a screen reader, JAWS, and it is very difficult for me
to
deal with PDF files. I know that other screen reader users have this
problem
too. So, I think it would be a good idea if the newsletter could also be
available as text-only online. That way it can be easily accessible to
those
of us who have problems with PDF files.

Best regards,

Sylvie
