Hi everyone,
I would like to mention an event that happened at NFB Convention that you
might not have had an opportunity to attend. Mr. Jerry Lazarus chaired a
session called Meet the Blind Month. It was a forum to share methods of
getting
NFB members out into the community to network and fund raise during Meet the
Blind Month, October.
Nina Levent forwarded to me some materials that not only talked about how
to introduce yourself to museums but also propose events to run in
conjunction with NFB Meet the Blind Month at the museums. Nina is with Art
Education
for the Blind and so the materials apply directly to art museums but I think
the
ideas are so good that they could apply to other museums as well.
She also included a list of ways to make exhibits accessible to the
blind. And yes, Braille labels headed the list but that was only one of many
suggestions.
Now would be the time to approach museums to develop a program to run in
October. I am sure Nina would be very happy to get the materials to you if
you just ask. She also has great connections with a large number of museums
throughout the country and I know she would be happy to help you establish a
creative relationship with a museum in your area.
A fund raising idea might be to sell Brailled name tags. Nina's e-mail
address is: artbeyondsight@xxxxxxx
