Hi Maridalia,
Congratulations on the subject your thesis. I think it is
wonderful. I am a graphic designer by profession
and design graphics for the visually impaired.
I think there is a lot graphic designers can do to add
variation and design wonderful books for blind children. I
think designing tactile books however requires special
knowledge, it is a specialization requiring special
knowledge. Such knowledge can be gained from blind persons,
parents, and teachers of the blind and other designers of
accessible graphics (among many others). Knowledge, however,
from the one is not the same as knowledge from the other. So
best to try to get as much information as you can.
Some of the most beautiful books I have seen have come from
the New Zealand Library for the Blind. They were designed by
a librarian. The aspect that I think was the most beautiful
about them was that they were designed with the idea that
they would be enjoyed by both sighted and blind together. So
I think one can learn a lot from many independent upon
professional title. I also can name a very distinguished
member of the list Bob Marek, a professor of English who has
designed wonderful tools and books. Perhaps it comes down to
that when something is lacking, dedicated souls work towards
filling the gap. Regardless of title, I feel those that come
with a solution are in fact designers, regardless of
education, sighted or visually impaired.
Right now I think this gap is the lack of books for blind
children. Many teachers and parents wish to have more
tactile books for their children. And many design wonderful
books for their students and children. There is the time
factor. Teachers, parents are overwhelmed with all that is
required from them. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they,
parents and kids could go to any library and fill their book
bags with tactile books! There was a very good article
written by a parent of a blind child in the RNIB magazine
Vision a couple
years where she expressed the wish for more tactile books
for her older child.
Polly Edman, the author of Tactile Graphics, is a graphic
designer. Her contribution to publications for the visually
impaired has been immense.
So good luck on your thesis. It will also be useful in
educating other graphic designers.
All the best,
Lisa
