[accessibleimage] Re: GPS drawing was Re: what about?

I see no reason why sandaro or trekker could not be caused to output this information in a more permanent form. I can already retravel a path I have taken whethher by root or just wandering with trekker but all I get is the information from the labels available on the map.

Hi Robert,
I'm not familiar with Sendero GPS system just an admirer but from other GPS believe that one can make maps from waypoints. There is a very interesting type of art, concept called GPS Drawing and have always thought that it might be an interesting concept for visually impaired artists. It is a bit untraditional but for some can perhaps be of interesting. What it is "GPS receivers can automatically record where you have been as a digital dot-to-dot trail. The drawings are written with a GPS receiver along a journey. They are created by treating travel like a geodetic pencil or a cartographic crayon."

The result of the drawing can be sort of seen as like a big hand in the sky writing on the earth. The drawing format is the area one walks or drives.Anyway the reason I thought that this might be an art expression that might be of interest to the blind is that the result is a line drawing could be swelled or embossed out and it uses a tool that many blind persons might have and uses it in a little unusual way.

The whole thing sort of reminds one of those large land drawings done 1000 of years back that one can only see from a distance. The difference here is that the drawing is only registered in the GPS, a fleeting image, which can be put on paper.

Anyway here is a link to the sight that tells about it

and link to site for making maps with GPS information

Hello Lisa:

In answer to your questions, the users of the Sendero GPS systems can create Waypoints and upload these for sharing. At this time, there is no way a user can print out a map with this data.

Hi,
What about then taking these two mails and combining them in a way? I mean from Google's map directions one gets a type of line map and from Rachel Magario map information. Couldn't visually impaired persons make their own maps with the aid of a GPS and share them over the net? I might be talking through my hat since I don't have a GPS only covet one but from what I have read is that one can plot in ones own point of interest (POI) and then create a trace file and the create a map from this. Either swell out or emboss with a Tiger. At the points of interest one could add the extra information, sound, smell etc. One could end up with two types of maps, a line (list) map like the Google direction information except it would have the added information and a geographical map from the GPS trace file. Or what about a site where local way finding information is on line sent in from visually impaired? One doesn't need a GPS for this, just perhaps a note taker to help remember what one notices.
Any thoughts?
Best,
Lisa
