Hi;

Well, we've now set up a mail forum for the auditory synthetic vision
project, the sign up page for which, can be found at:
http://www.freelists.org/list/asvs

For those of you who didn't see my last message announcing the project,
we're running a hybrid academic research and open source project aiming to
investigate whether auditory synthetic vision is a possiblity, and what it's
uses could be. Hopefully, the deliverable will be a free, open source
system that will allow blind users to look at images, draw pictures using
applications such as Paint, and maybe even solve the nasty problem of those
web based Word verification Turing tests.

The project has gained interest from academia and industry alike, and we
welcome contributions from anyone. We're in the process of continuing to
setup the project, and determine exactly what we're doing. So, anyone's
welcome to give input, and tasks with which you can get involved include
making suggestions on where you think the system could be used, how it
should work, helping out with the project admin, and even maybe do a bit of
coding *smile*. In whatever way you feel you could benefit the project,
you're contribution is welcome. I ask only one thing, that contributions
are in keeping with the spirit of the project, which is to do some cutting
edge academic research, and to produce a system that offers blind computer
users increased abilities. People with affiliations to access technology
vendors are welcome, be they beta testers, employees, contracters, or even
board members, but we would ask that all affiliations to the respective
vendors be left at the door for this project, as the project is about
communal growth, not competitive rivalry.

So, if you're interested, then please feel free to join the project's
mailing list. If you know of anyone who you feel would be interested, then
please pass on details of the project.

Thanks,

Will Pearson
on behalf of the project admin team
