Please can you forward this email from Toni Parker at the National
Portrait Gallery to anyone you think might be interested in doing
freelance work with the gallery.
with best wishes

The National Portrait Gallery is currently working on an exhibition
project, which aims to engage blind and partially sighted audiences. The
project is part of the Gallery's innovative community programme, Reaching
Out, Drawing In (www.npg.org.uk/reachingout) which is supported by the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
We are looking for experienced freelance artists to undertake a series of
outreach workshops with blind and partially sighted groups the southeast
and Hereford. You could be a photographer, sculptor, ceramicist, painter
or work with a different medium.
You will have experience of working with blind and partially sighted
people. Working alongside Learning and Access staff from the Gallery,
staff from the partner organisations and RNIB you will facilitate the
group to make their own artwork for display in the exhibition. Several
groups are participating in the project, including a school and a college.
A further group, of older people have already begun work on an oral
history/reminiscence project.
The artwork should take inspiration from the Gallery's collections and the
project has a theme of celebrity so could include actors, writers,
musicians, dancers, etc. The collections cover a range of mediums
(photography, painting, sculptures, multi media) and time periods from the
1500s to the present. We are open to ideas from artists and particularly
from the participants themselves as to how collections will form a base
for responses.
The workshops will take place from late October to February and will
culminate in an exhibition in the Studio Gallery at the National portrait
Gallery. The exhibition will open in April 2006 and will present both the
artwork made by the participants and works from the collection. The
exhibition is being developed in partnership with the RNIB.
Key skills and experience:
Experience of working with blind and partially sighted people.
Experience of facilitating others to create artwork
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work in a project team.
Preferable: experience of interpreting portraits.
Workshop dates:
The dates and times for the workshops have not yet been fixed but are
likely to be from October to late February and may involve evening and
weekend working. There could be opportunities for 2 or more artists to
work together in collaboration with the Gallery. We are particularly keen
to hear from disabled artists who are currently underrepresented in our
pool of freelancers.
Initially, please forward your cv and covering letter outlining your
interest in this project by Friday 14 October 2005. If you would like
further information please contact:
