[accessibleimage] Re: Accessible graphics programming using Logo and The vOICe

Hi Lisa,

Nice to hear that you have experience with Logo programming!

In principle one could use any programming language based on
textual input, be it Matlab, Mathematica, whatever. SVG will
likely also work, though I am not sufficiently familiar with
SVG to tell how far its programming support stretches for,
say, general purpose programming. In any case, the choice
of a programming or graphics specification language is in
part a matter of taste and existing level of experience, but
one property that I liked in particular about MSW Logo is
its support for saving GIF images and even GIF animations,
making it a perfect match for The vOICe. The GIF animation
support can be used to break up complex drawings into simpler
parts such that grasping the visual content of The vOICe's
soundscapes for partial drawings is less hard to deal with
than when hearing out the visual content of the completed
complex drawing.

Thanks for your note about the Art Beyond Sight Conference.
Indeed I had been asked to present there, but unfortunately
I could not attend. From what I have heard, there were also
demonstrations of the tongue display and forehead retinal
display at this conference. There were also several people
from Harvard Medical School who have used The vOICe to study
brain plasticity with users of The vOICe.

Best wishes,

Peter

Hi Peter,

This is really neat! I really am a fan of Logo. It is so nice to see it being used this way. At my work I have been working on drawing tools for the blind and Logo was one that I had proposed. Hadn't got very far in working with it, but it is so encouraging to see that you have it here.

I don't know if you were in New York for the Art Beyond Sight Conference a few weeks ago, but your work was discussed there. Very interesting.

Best,
Lisa
