PRESS RELEASE
BlindArt, in collaboration with the Courtauld Institute of Art, has announced the first ever Sense2Sense
project to coincide with its annual multi-sensory exhibition – Sense & Sensuality.
Students from Joseph Clarke, a special needs school, and St Clement Danes C of E Primary School will
pair up to investigate and photograph an artwork from Sense & Sensuality before travelling down the Thames
to match up their selected work with a piece from the Courtauld.
Verbal responses to the chosen works will be captured on video, and the students will construct handling
objects relating to their choices in the studio spaces in the Learning Centre at Somerset House, overseen by
Gallery Educator Bridget Crowley.
The project culminates with the children opening their Sense2Sense mini exhibition at Sense & Sensuality
2006 as a celebration of the project, where the video and handling objects will be on view to the public for
the first time.
The revolutionary project marks the first time that children have been encouraged to touch the works of art at
a selling contemporary art exhibition, and follows on from BlindArt’s pioneering 2005 project 4Sense, in
which visually impaired and sighted children worked together to create artworks that could be experienced
using all the senses.
By pairing two groups of students who are sighted and visually impaired, Sense2Sense draws on skills from
both to produce artefacts that can be appreciated by all through the use of their shared four senses.
The task, which is funded by SKY, aims to foster creative and social interaction between disabled and ablebodied
children and to allow them to be educated about art through their own and each other’s experiences.
